The Search for a Bishop Coadjutor:
Nomination by Petition

On August 16, 2007, the names of those discerned by the Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee and approved by Standing Committee as nominees to be the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Maine will be announced to the Diocesan community.

As required by national canons and adopted by the Diocesan Convention, 2005, in substitute Resolution #4, petitions to nominate other persons may be submitted to the Standing Committee during the period August 16 through August 31, 2007 (12 noon), under the following rules:

  1. Each petition must be signed by a Petitioner and by a discernment committee composed of twelve or more persons, who must be from at least three of the Areas of the Diocese.  Each member of the discernment committee must be a delegate and/or ex-officio voting member of the 2006 Annual Diocesan Convention.

  1. The candidate for nomination by petition must sign a written declaration of intent to accept the position of Bishop Coadjutor if elected.

  1. The candidate for nomination by petition must complete such background and financial investigations, medical checks, and other inquiry as the Standing Committee may require.  In general, these will be similar to the investigations and inquiries that the persons selected by the Search Committee have completed.  Arrangements for these will require coordination with the Standing Committee through its President, The Rev. Nancy Moore.

  1. Petitions for nomination and related materials may be submitted by delivery to the Diocesan Office at Loring House, 143 State Street, Portland, ME 04101.

  1. With the consent of the Standing Committee, persons nominated by petition will be Nominees, will be expected to take part in the process by which all Nominees will be introduced to the Diocese in the period between September 1 and the Convention, and will be submitted to Convention along with the Nominees discerned by the Search Committee.
